Arie Azene: Form and Color
The new series by Arie Azene (b. 1934, Homberg) presents form and color as analogous to sound and rhythm. Vignettes of musicians and musical instruments are transformed before our eyes into abstract paintings. As in the famous work by James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, 1871, also known as Whistler’s Mother, Azene is more interested in the form and color of the acrylic brushstrokes on canvas than in any content or theme. Watching as the figurative morphs into the abstract, the viewer can better appreciate the depth of the color and the softened contours of these innovative works.
