Macbeth

Opera on Screen Series

Screened operas from the world's most prestigious opera houses and festivals, with eye-opening introduction lectures by the series' editor, Merav Barak

By: Giuseppe Verdi
Stage: Salzburg Festival

Shakespeare wrote his tragedy in the sixteenth century, and Verdi composed the opera early in his career in the nineteenth century. One thing is obvious: the lust for control and authority seems powerful in any era. This production gives the work a chilling relevance.

Soprano Asmik Grigorian, one of the greatest opera stars of our time, delivers a triumphant version of Verdi's Lady Macbeth. Baritone Vladislav Sulimsky is convincing in the title role of the cruel and powerful king.
