One Night, Markovitch
Beit Lessin Theater
At the eve of the proclamation of the State, a boat with twenty young men left Europe on the way to a secret mission. Across the sea, twenty young women they have never met await them. The goal: fictitious marriage that will enable the women to escape the European inferno, overcoming the British Mandate’s prohibition on entry to Palestine. Among those on this mission Yaakov Markovitch, an insignificant man by all accounts, finds himself married to Bella Zeigerman, the most beautiful woman ever seen in Palestine. When everyone returns to forfeit the marriages, Markovitch refuses to give Bella a divorce.
