The Tales of Hoffmann
Opera on Screen Series
Screened operas from the world's most prestigious opera houses and festivals, with eye-opening introduction lectures by the series' editor, Merav Barak
By: Jacques Offenbach
Stage: Salzburg Festival
E.T.A. Hoffmann, the romantic writer, presented many imaginative love stories to his readers, including those of Olympia, the doll, Antonia, the singer, and Juliet, the streetwalker. Do his loving protagonists stand in the way of his muse, or do they feed the tormented writer's creativity? The opera moves on the axis between an "opera seria," i.e., a "serious" opera, and an amusing and parodic operetta.
Miriam Clemont directs the festival's flagship production. Marc Minkowski conducts a gallery of sublime singers and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
