Rakesh Chaurasia (India): Music for Peace and Brotherhood
Jerusalem International Oud Festival, 2024
Rakesh Chaurasia, considered the leading bansuri flute player of his generation, won two Grammy Awards in 2024. This is his first solo performance in Israel. Chaurasia is the successor of his uncle and teacher, the greatest bansuri player of all time, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, a favorite guest in Israel. Rakesh Chaurasia performed with his uncle many times even as a child. Rakesh Chaurasia has a phenomenal command of the bamboo flute, the bansuri, as well as the traditional melodic structures of the raga and the tala. He improvises freely and creates musical weaves that fill the listeners with a soothing peace alongside instinctive ecstasy. Considered an innovative and versatile artist, Chaurasia has participated in the recording of soundtracks for the Bollywood film industry, performed with classical music orchestras and collaborated with many jazz and fusion musicians, including Joshua Redman, Bela Falk and the great tabla player Zakir Hussain. Hussain, we will remember, appeared many times with Hariprasad Chaurasia in Israel as well.
