Young Yentl - the only daughter of Reb Todros, the shtetl's prestigious and erudite rabbi, revolts against women's fate in her traditional milieu. She knows her intellectual ability is not inferior to a man's and implores her father to teach her Torah. The rabbi consents and secretly educates her. When he dies, Yentl cuts her hair, leaves her native shtetl, and sets out to follow her dreams. Dressed as a young man named Anshl, she reaches the town of Bykhov, begins studying at the local yeshiva, and falls in love with Avigdor, a handsome, intelligent young student. The plot thickens when Yentl is set up with Hadassa, and the two soon stand under the Chuppah about to be married.
